Is it scholarly?

Here are five ways to tell whether a journal article is scholarly or peer reviewed.

On the databases search page, check the "scholarly or peer reviewed" search box
They usually have an extensive reference and or citation section. (example)
Many scholarly journal titles start with "The Journal of..."
Look in the bibliography of a book or article you know is scholarly, and you will find the titles of other scholarly material
Find the journal's home page on the web and read about the journal. Do the publishers identify the publication as scholarly? (Should you believe them?)

Five Ways to tell that a journal article is NOT scholarly or peer reviewed

No author is listed
There is no bibliography or reference list
If the author is listed, there is no information given about him/her
The article is very short
The source of the article is a newspaper or popular magazine title

Search hint for finding some publications in your area of interest:

Search the University Library catalog using your subject term, and the word "periodicals.

Seven ways to find books for your research

1. The University Library Catalog.

This database searches for books and other material owned and located here at CSUStan. It will also show you titles of journals and books to which the library subscribes or are available electronically.

2. Link+

This is a group of libraries in California and Nevada making it easy and fast to share books. Just search the Link+ catalog from the University Library Catalog and order your books online! (If CSUStan has it though, you have to go get it off our shelves!)

3. WorldCat.

This databases searches the library catalogs of a worldwide consortium of libraries. Most titles found in this database are available though Interlibrary Loan, or ILL. (Linked from the library database page)

4. Books in Print (linked from the library database page)

5. Project Gutenberg.

This resource provides full text of books which are in the public domain, such as the works of Shakespeare and Jane Austen.

6. Google Books.

Find full text of some books, some offer limited content.

7. Browse--the old fashioned way

Browse books on the shelves near your topic area. Use the library catalog search to find a general area to browse, or ask the librarian!

When in doubt, ask a Reference Librarian!

The first UL Salon was held on August 20th, 2008. The purpose of the Salon is to serve as a forum for the sharing of ideas and discussion of the trends which influence our work.

Below is a list of topics to consider for future discussion:

Google--how it changes the scenario of research
The future of the book. What is the role of the book as an information container?
How to do lots of stuff with almost no money. Could we re-assess the location and arrangement of some of the furniture we have now? What would Martha say?
Catalog enrichment/discovery tools (Can you list some examples we can look at?)
The role & future of academic libraries.
Information organization--are the old ways losing importance?
Statistics that matter (How do we demonstrate/illustrate the library's contributions to student learning?)

Articles in Peer reviewed journals can be primary or secondary articles or book reviews, but they have passed a rigorous test for contributing to the research of the field. They usually follow a common format, especially in the sciences and social sciences, that gives an abstract, a hypothesis, a literature section, a methods section, data section, and conclusions.
